Review of the first One-77

From Classic and Performance Car

This is a genuinely all-new supercar, not a re-face of an existing model. Just 77 will be built (why 77? Because 50 were needed to break even, 100 seemed too many, and 77 is a nice-looking number according to design director Marek Reichman), and each one will cost £1.1 million plus local taxes and optional extras.

Yes, that’s £1.1 million, and if that price had been for, say, a DBS-on-steroids, then alarm bells would be ringing. But instead, Aston Martin seems to have delivered possibly its greatest model ever; highly exclusive, uniquely engineered, kitted out with the most powerful normally-aspirated engine yet fitted to a production car and capable of 220mph-plus.

The basis for the One-77 is an all-new carbon fibre and extruded aluminium body tub, which takes three weeks and 3500 separate sections of carbon fibre to produce. The end result moves carbon fibre construction to a new level, with exquisite finishing – crucial, because much of it is exposed inside the cabin for maximum weight saving.

The V12 engine sits behind the front wheel line, lower and further back than in the other V12-powered Astons, to produce a front mid-engined layout with 50:50 weight distribution. A magnesium torque tube and carbon fibre propshaft transfer power to the rear-mounted six-speed transaxle.

Aston chief executive Dr Ulrich Bez specified that the new supercar should deliver 750bhp and 750Nm of torque; quite a step up from the V12 Vantage’s and DBS’s 510bhp and the DB9’s 470bhp. Cosworth were given the job, and really have delivered, giving the V12 a comprehensive re-work that includes an all-new cylinder head design, with different combustion chambers, more upright valve angles, repositioned camshafts to act directly on the cams rather than via operating fingers, variable inlet camshaft timing and a new intake system. It’s also been converted to dry sump, to allow the engine to sit lower.

The suspension has had to be specially designed to cater for the required low lines, taking a leaf from the German DTM race cars, with horizontally mounted coil-over-dampers front and rear, operated by bellcranks.

Uniquely in the current market, the carbon fibre tub is clothed in aluminium panels, handbuilt to allow a more sculptured shape – the rear panel is one-piece, unspoilt by shut lines (the rear window serves as the hatch), while the shape of the front wing tops is wonderfully complex and the way the door mirrors seem to have been drawn out of the door skin is exquisite.

Inside, there are countless trim options, all based around the basic premise of exposed lacquered carbon fibre and machined billet aluminium, but still deeply luxurious thanks to the use of ten hides, hand-cut into over 100 pieces and stitched together within the new production facility.

So far, 60 One-77s have been sold, and there are said to be enough serious enquiries to more than cover the remaining 17. It will take until the end of 2011 to build all of them; what comes next for the One-77’s exquisite new building seems to be anyone’s guess at the moment, but something special seems likely. Meanwhile, much of the One-77’s technology will gradually filter down to the rest of the range; starting, rather prosaically, with the new blade windscreen wipers. It’s not all glamour…

For those who feel that the current Aston Martin Rapide just is not luxurious enough for them, there is an alternative that may suite their needs called the Rapide Luxe Special Edition. Aston Martin has revealed a new version of their sexy sedan, the Rapide, adding on more luxurious appointments to please the most peculiar buyer.

The Rapide Luxe features new exclusive body colors, newly bright finished grill, 20-inch alloy wheels and a cabin laced with elegant tweaks that you would only expect in some of the most expensive luxury vehicles around. Some of these interior items include heated and cooled custom leather upholstery, Walnut wood trim, an exclusive rear entertainment system feed through a 1000 watt Bang & Olufsen audio system and a six-piece luggage set to match the seats.

The Rapide Luxe is powered by the same 6.0-liter V12 engine with 470 horsepower and 443 foot-pounds of torque as found in the regular Rapide model. Power is directed through a 6-speed Touchtronic 2 transmission allowing an acceleration time to 60mph from a standstill in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 188mph.

Pricing for the Rapide Luxe Special Edition has not been announced yet.

Aston Martin Unveils DB9 AMVOX2 Transponder Watch

The James Bond-style gadget will open and close your Aston Martin DB9 at the touch of a button

At first glance the DB9 Transponder watch looks like just another fancy and extortionately expensive luxury item.

However, upon closer inspection, it does not just make the skinniest and limpest of wrists more attractive or simply tell the time.

Aston Martin's cygnet will prove an ugly duckling

Interesting commentary on emissions strategy of the Cygnet.

Cue the Cygnet which, with its meagre 1.3L engine, produces only 110g of CO2 per km. Manufacture 3,000 Cygnets a year, as Aston plans to do from 2011, and you have a nice way of bringing down Aston’s average emissions per car. But here’s the catch - Aston has neither the time, money, core competence or production capacity to make their own economy car at such short notice, so it has opted to import and modify Toyota’s new mini-car the IQ (pictured, left) instead. Add some touches to the bodywork, upgrade the interior and you may be able to sell the Cygnet (pictured, right) for £30,000 - about double the price of the IQ.

Aston Martin's ugly duckling facing emissions impossible

Aston Martin is now a standalone business and unable to offset its emissions against any other vehicles. The only viable solution is to produce a low emissions vehicle that will provide an offset to please the Eurocrats because producing mobile phones, moccasins, skis, bathrobes and the like would not be seen as producing any emissions offset for Aston Martin irrespective of how lucrative these line extensions may be.

My guess is that Aston Martin would prefer to focus on its core performance car range, but we can’t always do what we want.

We can put this theory to the test by asking/ Is the Cygnet a line extension that Aston Martin really wants to produce?

If emissions were measured by the individual company, rather than by the parent group, would Ferrari or Lamborghini reduce emissions across its ranges or do as Aston Martin has?

Madoff Trustee Seeking Aston Martin, Yacht, More London Assets

A U.S. court-appointed trustee liquidating Bernard Madoff’s operations is seeking to recoup assets of the con man’s U.K. unit, including an Aston Martin and a yacht.

New York attorney Irving Picard, who is overseeing the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, agreed with Grant Thornton LLP, the liquidators of Madoff’s London unit, to coordinate on lawsuits in the U.K., according to court papers filed yesterday in New York. Journalists weren’t allowed into a hearing today at a London court in the liquidation of the U.K. unit.

Aston Martin V12 Motorcycle

This is pretty cobbled together, but still worth a look.

What would you do with a spare Aston Martin V12? I could imagine several things: a massive El Camino engine swap, new coffee table, etc. One German's genius answer: Stuffing it into a motorcycle frame, painted with a Simpsons theme.

Displayed at the Essen Motor Show earlier this month, this "V12 Aston/Homer" was available to the right buyer for the low price of $130,000, giving the lucky owner the 6-liter Aston engine pumping out 412 hp between their legs, and a gas tank air brush portrait of Homer Simpson in "Springfield Choppers" gear.

The seller describes the bike's speed as "fast, heavy, brutal," and when ridden the Aston sounds like a Beatles song covered by Rammstein. Now if we could only arrange a showdown

Feds move to grab Seattle tech millionaire's Aston Martin

Federal prosecutors pursuing a fraud indictment against embattled high-tech millionaire Mark Phillips have a new target -- his wheels.

Once a rising star in the region's tech industry, Phillips, 35, may lose his 2007 Aston Martin sports car, if federal prosecutors have their way. Not that the car is doing him much good -- after being found near his bathtub after huffing dust cleaner, Phillips has been staying at the Federal Detention Center at SeaTac by order of a federal judge.

Following on several civil suits brought by investors, federal prosecutors in September filed a five-count indictment against the former-startup star alleging he tried to bluff his way into $11 million of company money.

Authorities claim a multi-agency investigation shows the Seattle resident rerouted $100,000 to pay for a pair of gold watches, and attempted to use forged documents to regain control of a company bank account after he'd been ousted as CEO following the theft allegations.

Federal investigators and Phillips' opponents in several civil lawsuits describe a web of businesses in which funds invested by a noted Seattle philanthropist shifted into Phillips' control. His former investors -- though not federal authorities -- claim Phillips misused millions of dollars to finance a Belltown penthouse, pay lavish expenses and make a down payment on a space flight.

Now, prosecutors are demanding the forfeiture of an Aston Martin DB9 registered to Phillips and left outside the headquarters of Jet-Set Magazine.

Interlagos: Young Driver AMR Championship event summary

The strong performance of the Young Driver AMR-team at the Brazilian round of the GT1-World Championship continued in Sunday's Champions Race. After the victory in Saturday's Qualifying race, Darren Turner (GBR) and Tomas Enge (CZE) finished second in the Championship Race in the Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9 at the Interlagos-track at Sao Paulo. The podium finish keeps the hopes for the World Championship crown of Turner/Enge alive, as they now second in the drivers standings, and the only challengers of the championship leaders, when it comes to the last race next weekend at Argentina. Stefan Muecke (GER) and Christoffer Nygaard (DAN) finished 11th in the second Young Driver-Aston Martin.

Aston Martin Raises Price One-77

For some supercar buyers it will be a wonderful Christmas, because the first models of the One-77 will be delivered just before the holidays. However, the lucky ones do need to pay a higher amount than planned. The British car maker Aston Martin has raised the price of their very first super sports car with £ 150,000 (€ 176,000 or $ 233,000)!

Chris Porrit, chief engineer of the One-77, indicated that more than 60 of the final 77 units are sold. Not a single customer has already driven it and number 77 will leave the factory at the end of 2011.

Aston Martins Come in Second to Maser

The turning point in the one-hour battle came in the second-half, as the leading Young Driver AMR Aston Martin DBR9 of Darren Turner began struggling for grip on the hot and slippery 2.67-mile circuit. Despite a storming opening stint by Tomas Enge and a two-second gap following a flawless pit stop, the British driver slowly fell victim to a hard-charging Vitaphone Maserati.

Negrao, who rejoined in second after a solid fourth-place opening stint by Bernoldi, had set his eyes on the leader. The gap quickly shrunk, with the deciding moment coming with less than 12 minutes to go when the Brazilian dived to the inside of Turner to take over the top spot.

While Negrao’s aggressive move ended with both cars making slight contact, the Maserati was clearly the quicker car in the 90-degree heat. Troubles at AM A-M's Financial Owner

The debt-saddled Kuwaiti Islamic investment firm that owns a majority stake in automaker Aston Martin blasted a committee representing its creditors of trying to "derail" restructuring talks, and said it accepted the committee's resignation.

The development, outlined in a statement e-mailed Monday from The Investment Dar, marks the latest hurdle in restructuring talks with a firm that was among Kuwait's most prominent investment houses.

Finale Grande in South America; GT1 season concludes in Brazil and Argentina

The season for the Young Driver AMR-team in the inaugural FIA GT1-Word Championship concludes with back to back races in South America. The final two races take place this weekend at the Formula 1-track of Interlagos, Sao Paulo in Brazil and only seven days later the two Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9 will race for the last time this year at the scenic track of San Luis in Argentina. The two cars already arrived in Brazil last week and the two driver pairings of Darren Turner (GBR)/Tomas Enge (CZE) and Stefan Mücke (GER)/Christoffer Nygaard (DAN) are set to travel to Brazil today Wednesday. In the two races in South America, both the driver- and the team-championship will be decided. Young Driver AMR has the chance for top results in both championships in the first year in GT1-competition.

Cut now to Silverstone on an uncharacteristically sunny November day. Here are the two racing cars, still in full 'Ring livery, ready to take to the track. Not the full track; this will be the 'International' circuit, with Becketts a near-hairpin and a straight through the middle up to the Luffield sequence. And I'm about to drive them.

First off, a few laps in a road Rapide to calibrate myself and set a template. It feels rapid, as its name suggests, but it's also measured, languid, unflustered in Silversone's wide spaces. Shedding nearly half a ton might change things quite a lot, I feel.

LA Show 2010: Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept, A Rival For Aston Martin Cygnet

Found over at Midz, Cadillac has now launched a luxury city car to compete with the Aston Martin Cygnet. Cadillac's version with its scissor doors and elegant roof is a compelling alternative to the awkwardly proportioned Aston.

Power comes from a hybrid power plant and a diminutive 1.0 liter three-cylinder engine.

Aston Martin Cygnet gets a rival, shortly after it hit the showrooms. Of course, we are talking abut a concept, designed by the Americans of Cadillac. They brought the concept in the City of Angeles where will have its world premiere during LA Auto Show 2010. The guys of Cadillac have never fought Aston Martin before, but the new models of the two automakers have something in common: both Aston Martin and Cadillac have never created such vehicles before. So, it seems we have the premises of an interesting fight in the automotive world, between a automaker that wants to reduce the CO2 emissions and one that doesn’t want to live a niche untouched.

The new concept is called Cadillac Urban Luxury and it represents the future of the brand an a potential direction for the guys of Cadillac. The concept is 150.5 inches long and has a wheelbase of 97.1 inches. The model is 68.1 inches wide and 56.9 inches high. Cadillac’s three door hatchback can boast about an roomy interior and features 19 inch alloy wheels fitted extremely close to the car’s edges. This kind of design maximizes the room for the passengers and offers an optimum handling level, without extending the vehicle’s dimensions.

This is the most fun-to-drive Aston available with its relatively small package and big honking engine. Do I have any complaints? Yes, I do. The gearbox's shifts could be a bit slicker, and then there's the sticker shock that comes from the near $200,000 as-tested price. But complaining about the price when it comes to these types of vehicles is pointless.

Here's my suggestion to the people with a large amount of disposable income to play in this market: If you want a real driver, pony up an extra $30,000 and get a Ferrari 458 instead. But if you put more stock in styling, it's hard to argue with this V12 Vantage.

I agree with Marketing Week's article describing the Cygnet as an "ugly ducking."

The General Commands Again

Returning from the brink of collapse, General Motors posts a strong quarter amid increased US auto sales. There was a time not so long ago where we were talking about how GM would put the PBGC into insolvency.

GM reported third-quarter net income of $2.16 billion today, bringing the Detroit-based automaker’s earnings this year to $4.77 billion. That tops the $4.46 billion profit by Toyota City, Japan-based Toyota in the nine months ended Sept. 30, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

If I had a Billion Dollars: Classic Aston Martin Racing

Discovery network's HD Theater has shown various episodes from the 6-part "GT Racer" series over the last year. The most captivating edition was the "Shaken & Stirred" following two classic Aston Martins during a 6-hour race at Spa in Belgium

The "Gentleman Racer" creed is: "To be rich enough to race cars, you have to be rich enough to crash them."

There is a great example in this video when they put a million dollar plus 1960 DB4GT (V8)

I would highly recommend catching this show if you see it on TV. The sounds alone are intoxicating.

Morgan Threewheeler

I admit, I love Morgan cars. The 100 year old English car company has always fascinated me. They are everything that is right about British motoring: Distinctive design, beautifully craftsmanship, rich with history. I would love to have a Plus-4 in the garage to head out to the hills on the weekend.

Morgan Motor Cars recently announced the revival of the classic Morgan Threewheeler, and is there anything more British than a three-wheeled car?

This is not a car that simply "reminds" you of a classic car, a la new Ford Mustang or Dodge Charger. It IS the classic car only ridiculously faster:

Except where the 1930s' version ran a 10HP Matchless V-twin, the 2011 version runs a 100 HP Harley 1800. It propels the 500 KG body to 100 KMH in a staggering 4.5 seconds on the way to a 185 MPH top speed. Yeah 185, you read that right! In something which is basically 1 1/2 seats tied to a motor. It also has the refinement of a Miata 5-speed transmission powering the rear wheel.

And it looks beautiful from every angle:

Here you see the exposed pipes running down the side. I would remove any muffler material for sure and make this a straight pipe ride:

You might even qualify for carpool lane access in this car in LA - although it would be a shame to put on the stickers.

I know someone will get one of these to the US. I can't wait to see it in person
